Sandy’s Story: From fear to confidence, rebuilding after injury.

When I moved to Cornwall in November 2024, I was keen to continue my Pilates journey. I had recently started attending a beginners' Pilates class and was enjoying learning something new, so I booked a couple of one-to-one sessions with Heather at OsteoPilates Cornwall to build on that foundation.

Unfortunately, life had other plans.

Shortly after moving, my long-standing back condition flared up significantly. Pilates had to take a back seat while I focused on recovery with support from osteopathic treatment at Falmouth Osteopathic Clinic.

Returning After Injury

When I was ready to return to Pilates, I felt very different from the person who had first walked through the door.

The pain had affected more than just my back. I had lost confidence in my body and was worried about making things worse. At the same time, I knew that rebuilding strength and resilience would be an important part of moving forward.

It's fair to say I arrived at my first session feeling nervous.

A Different Approach

From the very first appointment, Heather asked me a simple question:

"What are your goals?"

That question immediately shifted my focus away from fear and pain and towards what I wanted life to look like again.

Rather than focusing solely on my symptoms, Heather took the time to understand what mattered to me and what I hoped to achieve.

We started gently, using simple movements and stretches, with the reassurance that I could stop at any point if I felt uncomfortable.

Rebuilding Strength and Trust

Over the following months, I attended regular one-to-one Pilates sessions and followed a personalised home exercise programme between appointments.

Little by little, my confidence began to grow.

I became stronger, more flexible and more comfortable moving again.

Just as importantly, Heather regularly reflected on the progress I was making, helping me recognise how far I had come.

That encouragement played a huge role in helping me trust my body again.

Learning to Understand My Body

One of the most valuable things I have gained through OsteoPilates Cornwall has been a greater understanding of how my body moves.

Through Heather's teaching, I have learned to connect with my body in a way I never had before. Understanding what is happening during movement has been empowering, both physically and emotionally.

Rather than fearing movement, I now feel more informed, capable and confident.

Looking Ahead

Today, I genuinely look forward to my Pilates sessions.

In fact, I now feel ready to progress into group classes—something I could not have imagined when I first returned.

Looking back, the journey has been about much more than exercise. It has been about rebuilding confidence, strength and trust in my body after a difficult period.

Would I Recommend OsteoPilates Cornwall?

Absolutely.

If you're considering Pilates for the first time, returning after injury, or looking to build strength and confidence in a supportive environment, I would describe OsteoPilates Cornwall as a place where you are truly seen and supported.

The approach is thoughtful, knowledgeable and grounded in genuine care.

I am incredibly grateful for the guidance I have received. It has made a meaningful difference to both my recovery and how I feel about the future.
