Ally’s Story: from sciatica to strength - how osteopathy & pilates helped me to regain my quality of life
Before retirement, I worked for many years as a nurse in both the Army and the NHS. These days, life is filled with activities I love: travelling, exploring places of interest, theatre visits, gardening, baking, walking, cold water swimming and researching family history. Most importantly, I enjoy spending time with family and friends.
However, a few years ago, persistent low back pain and sciatica were making it increasingly difficult to enjoy life to the full.
Living with Back Pain and Sciatica
My journey with OsteoPilates Cornwall began because of ongoing low back pain and Sciatica that had been present for many months and was gradually getting worse.
Initially, I found some relief through cold water swimming and later by using pain relief creams and medication. Unfortunately, the improvements became short-lived, and the pain began affecting my mobility, independence and overall quality of life.
Following a visit to my GP, I was referred to Physiotherapy. During a telephone consultation, the physiotherapist felt I needed treatment sooner than their waiting list would allow and provided a list of alternative clinics.
I chose Heather at Falmouth Osteopathic Clinic because it was the closest option.
Looking back, it was the best decision I could have made.
A Positive First Experience
From my very first appointment nearly three and a half years ago, I felt reassured.
Heather carried out a thorough consultation and assessment before discussing a treatment plan that included hands-on treatment, acupuncture and exercises to complete at home.
What stood out most was her professionalism, expertise and genuine understanding of my situation.
I immediately felt comfortable, confident and supported.
Most importantly, I felt hopeful.
Gradual Improvements and a Return to Mobility
With each appointment, my symptoms began to improve.
My back pain eased, the Sciatica settled and my mobility gradually returned. As the pain reduced, my confidence grew and I was able to enjoy everyday life much more comfortably.
Being able to move more freely and without constant pain felt like a gift.
As my recovery progressed, Heather suggested that Pilates could help maintain and build upon the improvements we had achieved through treatment.
Discovering Pilates
My introduction to Pilates began with one-to-one sessions before progressing into regular group classes.
I have now been attending Pilates classes for over two and a half years and have never looked back.
The classes help keep my body mobile, flexible and strong. They provide regular movement, stretching and strengthening exercises that help me stay active and manage any minor issues before they become bigger problems.
One of the greatest benefits is knowing that I now have the knowledge and confidence to help myself.
If I experience stiffness or discomfort, I have a toolbox of exercises that I can use at home. And if I ever need additional support, I know Heather is there to help.
More Than Just Exercise
The benefits of OsteoPilates Cornwall have gone far beyond reducing pain.
Attending both clinic appointments and Pilates classes has given me confidence in my mobility, my health and my future wellbeing.
The classes themselves are always thoughtfully planned and suitable for a range of abilities. Heather's knowledge, enthusiasm, patience and friendly approach create an environment where everyone feels supported.
There's also plenty of laughter along the way.
Perhaps one of the most unexpected benefits has been the friendships I have made.
Through the classes, I have met a wonderful group of like-minded women. Over coffee, lunches and conversations, we've shared experiences, put the world to rights and had a great deal of fun together.
The sense of community has become just as valuable as the exercise itself.
