Suze’s story: rediscovering strength, mobility & confidence in retirement

Retirement often creates opportunities to explore interests and activities that busy working lives leave little time for.

Retirement has meant embracing a more active lifestyle and making the most of everything Cornwall has to offer.

Nature photography, wildflower painting, gardening, coastal walks and spending time outdoors have all become regular parts of life. With more freedom to enjoy these activities, maintaining strength, mobility and flexibility has become increasingly important.

That's what led me to OsteoPilates Cornwall.

Looking for Pilates With a clinical Approach

A recommendation from a friend first introduced me to OsteoPilates Cornwall.

What stood out immediately was that the classes were designed and taught by an Osteopath.

Rather than attending a generic exercise class, I had hoped to find someone with the qualifications and deeper understanding of mobility, movement and joint health.

That expectation has certainly been met.

Knowing the classes were small and that individual participants would receive personal attention also played a significant role in deciding to join.

The idea that exercises would be adapted to suit different abilities and mobility levels, rather than expecting everyone to perform exactly the same movements, was particularly appealing.

A Welcoming and Supportive Environment

From the very first class, the atmosphere felt welcoming and inclusive.

One of the things that stood out most was Heather's attention to each participant. There was a genuine commitment to ensuring everyone was benefiting from the exercises and performing movements safely and effectively.

The regular check-in at the beginning of each class remains one of the most appreciated aspects of the sessions.

Heather takes the time to ask whether anyone has any aches, pains or joint issues that need to be considered that day. This helps ensure that exercises can be adapted when needed and that participants feel supported throughout the class.

Another key benefit is the way exercises are structured - each exercises includes different levels of challenge, allowing everyone to work at a level that suits their body and ability. Whether someone is new to Pilates or more experienced, there is never any pressure to keep up with others.

Instead, the focus remains on individual progress and moving well.

Stronger, More Flexible and More Capable

After attending classes regularly for more than two years, the improvements have been significant.

Despite being in my sixties and not considering myself particularly fit when I started, I have experienced substantial gains in both strength and flexibility.

Core strength has improved enormously, leading to noticeable benefits in everyday life.

Activities that once required more effort now feel natural and effortless.

Standing from a squat position, getting up from the floor, bending down in the garden or navigating uneven trails are all much easier than they once were.

Those simple improvements have made a remarkable difference to day-to-day life and the ability to fully enjoy retirement and the activities that matter most.

Supporting an Active Lifestyle in Cornwall

One of the greatest benefits of improved strength and mobility is the freedom it creates.

Whether exploring Cornwall's coastline, spending time in the garden, pursuing creative hobbies or simply remaining active and independent, having a body that feels stronger and moves more freely makes everyday life more enjoyable.

Pilates has become an important part of maintaining that freedom and supporting long-term health and wellbeing.

Would I Recommend OsteoPilates Cornwall?

Without hesitation.

For anyone considering attending for the first time, the advice is simple:

You'll enjoy it.

You'll find a knowledgeable and engaging instructor who is genuinely interested in the health and wellbeing of every participant, a friendly and supportive class environment, and a beautiful studio space in which to learn and move.

Most importantly, you'll find classes that meet you where you are and help you build strength, mobility and confidence at your own pace.
