Karen’s Story: stronger, more flexible, and back to doing what i love
Like many people, I have always enjoyed keeping active.
I love walking, painting, baking, spending time with family and attending live music events. Family life is especially important to me, and with a large family and five grandchildren, there are always plenty of opportunities to stay busy and make memories together, particularly during holidays by the sea here in Cornwall.
Earlier in life, I regularly participated in high-intensity exercise and enjoyed being physically active. However, over time, work became increasingly demanding and eventually arthritis and musculoskeletal problems began to limit the activities I could comfortably do.
I knew I needed to find a form of exercise that would support my body rather than aggravate it.
Looking for Exercise That Worked With My Back issues and pain, Not Against It
One of my biggest frustrations was feeling restricted by my back issues.
I wanted to improve my strength and flexibility, but I needed an approach that respected my limitations and allowed me to exercise safely and confidently.
When I discovered OsteoPilates Cornwall, I was immediately drawn to the back-focused Pilates classes. The emphasis on back health felt exactly like what I had been searching for.
Looking back, joining the classes was one of the best decisions I could have made.
A Welcoming Introduction to Pilates
My first experience at OsteoPilates Cornwall was excellent.
From the beginning, the classes felt friendly, supportive and well structured. There was a gentle introduction to the exercises, allowing me to build confidence before gradually progressing to more challenging movements over time.
One thing that stood out immediately was Heather's ability to support everyone in the room. She somehow manages to guide the whole class while still paying attention to each individual's needs.
Importantly, she recognises that certain exercises may not suit everybody. Rather than expecting everyone to do the same thing, she provides alternatives when needed, ensuring that people can continue progressing safely.
Three and a half years later, I would now describe myself as working at an intermediate level—something I would not have imagined when I first started.
Building Strength, Flexibility and Confidence
One of the most valuable aspects of the classes has been the gradual progression of exercises.
Each session builds on previous achievements, allowing strength, flexibility and balance to develop steadily over time.
The improvements I have experienced have been significant.
My back is much stronger than it was when I first joined. I can walk much further and more comfortably, and my flexibility and balance have improved enormously.
The benefits haven't just been physical either.
Pilates has had a positive impact on my emotional wellbeing. I feel less frustrated by pain and physical limitations, and I have more energy to enjoy spending time with family and making the most of everyday life.
More Than Just Exercise
One unexpected benefit of attending regular Pilates classes has been creating dedicated time for myself.
Like many people, it can be easy to prioritise work, family and other responsibilities ahead of personal wellbeing.
Having a regular class in the diary provides valuable time to focus on my own health and wellbeing, knowing that I am doing something positive for both my body and mind.
Would I Recommend OsteoPilates Cornwall?
Absolutely.
If you are looking for a Pilates class that helps improve strength, flexibility and balance whilst taking individual needs into account, I would highly recommend giving OsteoPilates Cornwall a try.
The classes are supportive, welcoming and carefully progressed, allowing you to challenge yourself without feeling pushed beyond your capabilities.
As I often tell people:
"Just do it!"
It's the first Pilates class I have attended where I genuinely feel like I have worked hard, but without overdoing it. The gradual progression helps you achieve noticeable improvements in strength, flexibility and balance within a relatively short period of time.
Even after three and a half years, I am still thoroughly enjoying the classes and continuing to benefit from them.
